Be sure to stay away from the big box store log set because the are made will a starch filler and will have a slight odor while they operate.

Vent free gas logs can operate with no chimney or with the fireplace damper closed or open. With an open damper the will operate like a vented log set with lesser efficiency and closed you will get 99.9 percent efficient rating because you will be getting all the warn air into the room. The biggest complaint we get about vent free is that the produce so much heat on high and can only operate them several hours at a time. To remedy this you can crack the damper a small amount to release the warmness.
